Secret Government documents which detail Britain’s policies on fighting global terrorist funding, drugs trafficking and money laundering have been found on a London-bound train.
The papers were handed to the Independent on Sunday newspaper, which has since returned them.
They contain criticism of countries – including Iran – which are signed up to the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), an inter-governmental body created to combat financial crime and the financing of terrorism, according to the newspaper.
A Treasury spokesman said: “We are extremely concerned about what has happened and we will be taking steps to ensure that it doesn’t happen in the future.”
The documents were found on Wednesday, the same day that another batch of secret papers relating to intelligence assessments of Iraq and al Qaeda were handed to the BBC after being left on a train.
Sky’s political correspondent Niall Paterson said: “One of the arguments that has come out is that these documents are being left deliberately on trains.
“That beggars belief, given the sensitivity of the material.
” A conference on global financial crime begins in Westminster on Monday. Some of the files were briefing notes and draft speeches for that.
